INTRODUCTION

.~> 1st Muharram= Thursday, Oct, 15 (+/- in Diff Countries)

With the sighting of the new moon, us Muslims usher in, the Month Of Muharram; the 1st Month of our Lunar Hijrah Calendar. Muharram meaning: “SACRED”, is a blessed month of great reward and specific virtues.
.~> Almighty Allah sanctified it in the Holy Qur’an: “Four of them (Zil-Qadah, Zil-Hijjah, Muharram & Rajab) are sacred.” (Surah Tawbah:36)

FASTING

.~> The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) said: “The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadhan is the fasting of Allah’s month of Muharram.” (Muslim)

Although these fasts ARE NAFL & not obligatory, yet, the one who fasts in these days, out of his own will & choice is entitled to a great reward by Almighty Allaah for each fast.

OCCURRENCE OF SIGNIFICANCE:

.~> Musa (AS) & the Bani Israel crossed the Red Sea miraculously and Allaah granted deliverance to them from Fir’oun by drowning him.

THE DAY OF ASHURAH (10th Of Muharram)

.~> The 10th of Muharram (Ashurah) will be on: Saturday, Oct, 24 (+/- depends when you started)

Muharram is a sacred month as a whole, but the 10th of Muharram is the most sacred amongst all its days. The day is named ‘Ashurah(10th)’. It is one of the most important and blessed days of Allah Ta’ala in the Islamic calendar.

PRACTICES TO BE OBSERVED ON THE 10th (only 2 mentioned in authentic sources)

1) FASTING The Prophet (Sallallaahu-Alayhi-Wa-Sallam) has exhorted & encouraged His Ummah to fast on this day. The following Ahaadeeth indicate clearly that it is important to either fast on:

(a) The 9th & the 10th or, (Friday & Saturday)

(b) The 10th & 11th of Muharram. (Saturday & Sunday)

To fast only on the day of Ashurah (10th) is Makrooh (undesirable). One should fast (a) or (b) to safeguard his deed from resemblance with the Christians & Jews who fast only on the 10th.

.~> This is a Nafl (Optional) Fast.

.~> However, the act of fasting is Sunnah.

.~> Ibne Abbas (RA) said: “When Rasoolullah (SAW) observed the fast of the Day of Aashurah & ordered (His Companions(RA)) to fast, they said, “O Rasoolullah (SAW)! It is a day honoured by the Jews and Christians.” Rasulullah (SAW) said, “The coming year, if Allah wills, we will fast on the ninth (also).” (Muslim)

.~> The Holy Prophet (SAW) said: “Observe the fast of Aashooraa and oppose the Jews. Fast a day before it or a day after.” (Bayhaqi)

.~> Abu Qataadah (RA) narrates that Rasoolullah (SAW) said:“It is a compensation for the (minor) sins of the past year.”(Muslim)

2) BEING GENEROUS: One should spend freely and be generous on one’s family & dependants & spend more on them than what is normally spent.

.~> Rasulullah (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) said: “One who generously spends on his family on the day of Aashora, Allah will increase (his provision) for the whole year.” (Baihaqi)

REFRAIN FROM THE FOLLOWING IN MUHARRAM & ON 10th:

.~> To believe that a child born in this month is likely to misfortune.

.~> To incur debts so as to spend on one’s family or spend excessively.

.~> To make Ta’ziah, read Mirthiya & Shahadat Nama. Many people regard this day as the day of mourning the martyrdom of Husain (RA). Or to cry, tear one’s clothes. .~> To make sweet drinks with the belief that it would quench the thirst of those martyred in Karbala. .~> To prepare Khitchra (food with lentils) or other foods with incorrect beliefs

.~> To indulge in adornment and dying of the hair and beard, Applying Surmah (with incorrect belief).

.~> Let us observe this great Month according to the ways of Rasulullah (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) and the Sahabah (Radhiyallahu-Anuhum). Let us refrain from all actions & innovations which deprive us of the blessings from Allah Ta’aala. May Allah guide us all upon the Straight Path and save us from His displeasure. Aameen.

Muharram heralds the beginning of the Islamic New Year. The advent of a new year generally coincides with the adoption of new resolutions. Generally directed towards our material needs: our homes, cars, assets; or our person: becoming healthier, improving our education, etc.

However at this juncture let us focus on the deteriorating conditions facing the Muslim Ummah at large. We need to analyse our position in the midst of all this turbulence and seek ways of reversing these calamities and drawing Allah’s Mercy instead. To win Allah’s favour we need to bring a change into the lives of Muslims over the world. But for change to take place globally it must first start locally.

In order to achieve this there needs to be a shift of focus. Instead of aiming at material growth, let us aim for spiritual growth. Instead of worrying over our physical appearance, why not aim at improving our inner selves? Wealth and physical beauty seem to be on everyone’s agenda but what about our humanity that gives us value as humans? Honesty, integrity, trustworthiness and love for humanity are also precious resources. Though they may not have monetary value, they are indeed more valuable than gold and silver. They are the values that give us true worth as humans and make us assets to our communities.

As Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam profoundly observed,:“Verily, Allah looks not at your wealth or your physical features. Rather, He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”

P.S.  Please Share this article with others. InShaAllah working on post {100}, Maaf it’s taking longer than expected.

Going out for the weekend.. Toronto here I come.. sleepover at Whitby, and then spend the Sunday at Scarborough, Thorncliffe etc. Brings back memories, I tried pushing it all aside, I shut everyone and everything out and now once again it’s all vivid memories. (Sigh)
